James Fair (director) first saw Kate Goes at the Rainbow pub in Birmingham when drinking with Jim Smith (assistant director on Watching & Waiting). They enjoyed the performance so much that they knew the band should accompany a soundtrack somewhere! However, the line “I’m filmmaker and I’d like to use your music for a film” doesn’t really work anymore and it wasn’t until The Ballad of Des & Mo that James managed to get ‘Heartbeat’ into a soundtrack. Its lyrics were perfect as a set up to Des & Mo’s characters and was an obvious choice for the opening credits. James met Kate at a screening of the movie later in Birmingham and everyone involved expressed mutual respect, and are keeping an eye on working together in future.
